4 Questions to Ask Your MD About Tirzepatide

Of course, your healthcare provider will want to understand all the nuances of how your body handles glucose before determining the best course of treatment for you, says Florence Comite, MD, an endocrinologist and the founder of the Center for Precision Medicine and Health in New York City.

Tests to determine your blood sugar levels, such as an oral glucose tolerance test, may be ordered to confirm a diagnosis of diabetes. Your fat and muscle composition may be assessed, as well. “Factoring in family health history, your own past medical history, habits, and lifestyle will help determine if Mounjaro is appropriate,” Dr. Comite says.

Here are questions to bring up with your doctor to help you and your care team decide if tirzepatide could help you manage blood sugar, support weight loss, and reduce your risk of cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.

1. Could Tirzepatide Work Better Than the Drugs I’m Currently Using?

If you have both type 2 diabetes and obesity or established cardiovascular disease, and there are no medical reasons to avoid tirzepatide, the medication could be an excellent choice, says Florencia Halperin, MD, a Boston-based endocrinologist and the chief medical officer of the weight loss clinic Form Health. “Mounjaro is very effective at both lowering blood sugar and causing weight loss,” she says.

In fact, according to the latest care standards released by the American Diabetes Association, tirzepatide is recognized as having “very high efficacy” for both blood sugar control and weight management.

You may also be a good tirzepatide candidate if you struggle to manage your blood sugar or reach your health goals despite taking a maximum dose of a traditional GLP-1 receptor agonist.

2. Does Tirzepatide Work Without Diet and Exercise?

It isn’t proven that you will get meaningful blood sugar and weight-lowering results by taking an injection alone. The FDA specifically approved Mounjaro as an adjunct to diet and exercise for managing type 2 diabetes.

[1]

“All of the studies that have been done showing safety and efficacy of Mounjaro have also included a lifestyle component, in which patients are counseled on healthy nutrition, physical activity, and behavior change,” says Dr. Halperin. “So discussing those aspects with the prescribing provider and making sure there is a good supportive plan for incorporating healthy habits are important as well.”

3. I’m Not Overweight or Obese — Could Tirzepatide Still Be Right for Me?

If you have type 2 diabetes, your doctor may prescribe tirzepatide to manage blood sugar, which can also reduce cardiovascular risk regardless of your weight.

If your body mass index (BMI) is in a lower range and you do not have type 2 diabetes, it is not for you, says Louis Aronne, MD, an endocrinologist and the director of the Center for Weight Management and Metabolic Clinical Research at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City — at least, not yet. Future studies may reveal whether it’s safe and effective for those in lower BMI ranges, but for now, he adds, “I don’t think that people in that lower weight range really need to be doing stuff like this.”

A doctor will evaluate several personal health factors before making the final decision. “I recommend that patients be prepared to disclose all of their medical and surgical history, medication and allergy history, and recent laboratory studies with any medical provider who might be considering it as a treatment,” Halperin says.

4. How Much Will Tirzepatide Treatment Cost?

There’s one more important variable that affects whether tirzepatide is right for someone. “Unfortunately, cost is often a very significant factor in the decision-making process,” says Halperin. “Patients who do not have insurance coverage for Mounjaro are likely to find it prohibitively expensive.”

According to Lilly, the list price for brand-name Mounjaro is $1,112.16 per one-month supply.

[9]

Most health plans cover Mounjaro when prescribed for its FDA-approved uses in people with type 2 diabetes, such as lowering blood sugar and reducing cardiovascular risk, though out-of-pocket costs and copays vary depending on your specific plan.

While lower-cost GLP-1 and GIP options are frequently advertised online through telehealth platforms, these are typically compounded versions. The FDA cautions patients that unapproved compounded medications do not undergo the agency’s safety, quality, and effectiveness reviews.
